My New Job

Well, Friends, yesterday was my first day. I was a little bit unprepared, after all, I've been a homebody for the last year and a half, essentially! I was asked to come in at 10 am, but wasn't really told how long they wanted me there for the first day of training. So I had a bowl of cereal for breakfast, then walked to the massage therapy center.

It's situated in the basement level of the shops along Main Street's historic downtown. When you walk down, you start to smell the soft scent of the aromatherapy candles, and it becomes quiet as you descend. It's like entering another dimension. I was joined by another newbie, Em, who had come earlier to get a massage. She'd never had one before, so the owner had given her a free massage so she'd understand what she was representing. As I had honestly told the owner that I'd been a customer before, I did NOT get a free massage. Damn! I'll have to ask about a possible discount, ha ha. (I've never had a hot stone massage, after all...)

We learned a bit about the system, how they like things run down there. Very clean, very professional. I love it already. When I was young, I worked in a tanning salon, and also a full-service beauty salon, doing the same thing that I'm now going to do again. I have no doubt that I can handle this. However, during the training, right around about 1 pm, I started having tummy grumbles. I hadn't brought any snacks, nor brought a lunch because I didn't know how long I was expected to be there. Luckily, they weren't expecting us to actually answer phones or do anything productive, though we helped with quite a few things yesterday, so we ended up leaving at 1:45 pm. I walked home, tummy inverted, headache starting, and scarfed some left overs as soon as I arrived at my apartment. The headache didn't go away until I'd gotten a good night's sleep. I'm one of those people that has to eat on a regular basis, or I get a lot of weird physical issues, like crankiness, headaches, indecisiveness, etc.

Today I'll be working 12-5, so I'll be eating a big lunch before heading over, and I'll bring a snack or two with me. I learn fast.

Book Review Alert:

By the way, I just finished reading Watership Down, by Richard Adams. It was so good! It's very transporting, the way The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame was for me when I first read that book. You start thinking like a rabbit, and using Lapine (rabbit language) in your head. I also started wishing that I could just lie in a meadow with a creek nearby, munching clover and only having to worry about how far away my burrow is from where I'm relaxing.

My next book is The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger, which has grabbed me already! I hope I'm not devastated at the end. I tend to get really sucked in to stories, and they work their magic on me. When I read Rogue Wave, by Boyd Morrison, I was practically bawling at the end. If you want a fast read, that's a good one. I read it in one weekend. It was hard to put down! The author is as good as Michael Crichton, which is saying a lot. By the way, the last book (published posthumously) for Michael Crichton was The Pirate Latitudes, which was also a very fast read. Exciting... full of real pirates and true-to-life details about how they lived and fought. If you're looking for an adventure story that's historical and also very engrossing, then pick up this book. You won't be sorry!

Good luck with the new job Shari! I think discounts should be offered to all employees :)

I've read the Time Traveler's Wife. It sucked me in too and I couldn't put it down. When I was done reading it, I decided that I like it but that it was overrated in the media. That's my $.02

Glad you enjoyed your first day Shari (even with a grumbly tummy) - they're great hours to be working which will definitely leave you with some 'you' time. I love the way you described walking down into your work place - it sounds very tranquil... enjoy x

Okay... by now you know I'm a receptionist now, and NOT working on Wall Street. I just walk PAST Wall Street on my way to work. :-)

Thank you all for your support! I'm loving my job, and I got a free facial instead! Yes! It was very relaxing, also!
